Foods That Fuel Your Weight Loss
In order to lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn; the types of foods you eat also plays an important role. Foods that are packed with fiber, protein and other beneficial components will help make the pounds melt off.
Pumpkin
Don't serve yourself a hearty slice of whipped cream topped pumpkin pie and expect to lose extra pounds, but do try pumpkin prepared as a side dish or snack to help take off the weight. Pumpkin's secret is its high fiber content, and you can mash your own or get it right from the can. If snacking on plain pumpkin sounds less than appetizing, jazz it up a bit by sprinkling it with cinnamon and almond slivers and a dash of a low-calorie sweetener.
Sardines
These crowded little fish are also packed with components that help take off the weight. Their high protein content boosts your metabolism while it evens out your blood sugar and leaves you feeling sated. Another key component is omega-3, which benefits both your cardiovascular system and your mood.
Beef
Protein and omega-3 can also be found in beef, but your best bet is to stick with varieties that have been grass-fed. Other beef may be polluted with steroids, hormones and antibiotics that negate the healthy benefits. If you're not sure if the beef has been grass fed, opt for a buffalo burger.
Grapefruit
Eating half a grapefruit right before a meal has been shown to help people lose weight, according to a study at La Jolla, California's Scripps Clinic. Although researchers are not exactly sure why it works, grapefruit offers benefits beyond weight loss. Its lycopene helps fight cancer.
